Different manufacturers, and even different platforms or generations from the same brand, can be confusing. Many of us have bought a device based on a flashy name, only to be frustrated by its sluggish performance. Laptop CPUs are particularly notorious for this. To help you gauge performance before buying a CPU or laptop, I’d like to introduce a site I use every time.

The first place I bookmark is PassMark, a benchmark site. You can find it easily on Google, and I’ve found it incredibly useful for comparing hardware tiers.

Click the scale icon in the top right, and you’ll be able to enter the CPUs you want to compare. In the window that follows, you can search for up to five processors. Just type in the exact model number of the laptop CPU you’re considering, click it when it appears, and hit the “Compare” button at the end. Even if you don’t know complex technical jargon, the quantified data provides an intuitive comparison, making it a great baseline for your decisions.

Is a Higher Score Always Better?

The most prominent orange score on the site is the “CPU Mark.” At first, I thought a higher score automatically meant a faster computer, but that isn’t always the case. This score represents the maximum processing capacity squeezed out of all computing operations. In reality, the speed we feel during web browsing or the frame rates we get in games are more heavily influenced by single-thread performance (single-core performance) and cache structure. Intel 270K Plus vs. AMD 9800X3D?

When I was actually debating between the Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and the Ryzen 7 9800X3D at the store, I noticed something odd. Intel’s multi-core score was much higher, yet the Ryzen was more expensive.

It turns out Intel achieved a higher score by cramming in 24 cores to increase the total raw processing volume. On the other hand, the Ryzen 9800X3D is built with expensive 3D V-Cache stacked physically to maximize gaming performance, which drove up the price while delivering superior real-world gaming frame rates. Each has a different purpose; neither is strictly “better.” It’s complicated, isn’t it?

Confusing Laptop CPU Names?

When choosing budget-friendly laptops, there were some “distractor” models I had to watch out for:

  • Chipsets like the Celeron N4120 and N100: While the N100 is significantly better than the N4120, their performance limitations are clear.
  • The 7535HS, which looks like part of a recent lineup, turned out to be a repurposed older Zen 3+ architecture.
  • The ultra-low-power 1345U, despite carrying the “i5” title, failed to reach its full potential due to power limits.
  • The Ryzen AI 5 PRO 340, which uses the latest naming convention, was quite difficult to gauge in terms of performance tier just by its name.

Because laptop components cannot be upgraded once purchased, your initial choice dictates everything. It is crucial not to be swayed by the manufacturer’s flashy numbering or marketing jargon. Investing just a few minutes before a purchase to compare multi-core and single-thread scores yourself is the most reliable way to protect your wallet.
