GK798 PRO Review: A Silent Mechanical Keyboard

GK798 PRO silent mechanical keyboard

I’ve often wanted the feel of a mechanical board at work without making everyone nearby listen to it. Trying several silent switches came out of that concern. The GK798 PRO is the latest office option I’d point to for someone in the same position. A lively typing sound can be enjoyable at home, but sometimes I want the physical response to stay between my fingers and the keyboard while the room remains quiet.

GK798 PRO calming color combination

The design is restrained, with a calm combination of colors that doesn’t feel tied to a passing trend. It looks modern without being bulky or deliberately attention-seeking. On an office desk, it blends with the surroundings rather than asking the rest of the setup to follow its styling. That makes it easier for me to use there.

Substantial plastic housing of the GK798 PRO

Even though the housing is made of plastic, it feels remarkably substantial in the hand. It gives the impression of being well-constructed, and there is absolutely no sliding during heavy typing sessions. This is thanks to the five-layer internal sound-dampening structure, including the silicone base at the bottom. Because of this, there is virtually no hollow “pinging” sound, making the keyboard feel high-quality right out of the box without the need for custom tuning.

Deep Blue silent switches

The fitted Deep Blue silent switches have a soft, smooth response. Compared with the scratchier sensation I associate with some silent red switches, this has more of the yielding resistance of pressing into dough. The cushioning at the end of the stroke matters during long document work: the impact arriving at my fingertips feels reduced, without eliminating the physical pleasure of pressing a mechanical key.

The PBT caps should resist developing shine through use. Their surface has a slight texture under the fingers, which I expect to remain comfortable even when my hands become sweaty. Double-shot construction also gives the legends a clear finish. Together those details suit a keyboard intended to spend a lot of time handling ordinary office typing.

In the office, typing was quiet enough for nearby colleagues not to notice it. What I heard was a small, lower-pitched note rather than a sound that carried through the room. I found that helped me concentrate. To me, the useful achievement here is retaining the mechanical pressing sensation while controlling the noise that normally makes that choice awkward at work.

Pros

  • The massive 8000mAh battery capacity means you can use it wirelessly for long periods without worrying about charging.

Cons

  • The user interface for the proprietary software is a bit dated and requires a short learning curve for initial adjustments.

If the board is mainly for an office, check the switch option carefully and make sure it is the silent version you want for that environment. This combination suits someone who needs a peaceful environment but doesn’t want to give up the feel under the fingertips. Enjoying that small part of the working day doesn’t require a loud keyboard.
