The Godox C100 is a toy camera priced around 60,000 KRW that features a transparent viewfinder and a light meter function. While the image quality is low at 2 megapixels, it serves its purpose well for checking exposure when using manual lenses or film cameras, and for capturing casual everyday snaps. It is a decent choice for those looking for a sub-device with an analog aesthetic.

Minimal Package and Contents

Opening the simple package reveals very sparse contents. The Godox C100 body and a USB-C cable for charging and data transfer are all you get. There is no built-in memory, and a Micro SD card is not included in the basic package. To start shooting immediately, you must separately prepare a Micro SD memory card up to 128GB. It is a configuration that strips away everything except the bare bones of the device without any extra accessories.

65g Lightweight Design and Transparent Viewfinder

Weighing in at just 65g, it is much lighter than a smartphone. The housing is finished with plastic material, so it lacks a heavy, premium feel, but it is actually burdenless to slip into a jacket pocket. What catches the eye on the front is the large 60.8 x 47.8mm transparent display occupying the upper section. The design, which looks as if a past optical viewfinder was simply detached, stimulates a strange sense of nostalgia.

Honestly, looking strictly at the performance of the lens itself, it is at a level lower than the front camera of a modern smartphone. Rather than expecting crisp and clear image quality, it is better to approach it for the purpose of enjoying the device’s unique, crude aesthetic.

On the bottom of the device, speaker holes, a USB-C port, and a Micro SD card slot are neatly arranged side by side. The necessary ports are intuitively gathered in one place, creating a clean look without any clutter. On the right side of the device, there is a toggle switch for mode switching. With this single switch, you can intuitively navigate and operate from powering off to taking photos and videos, and even using the light meter function.

Light Meter Function Displaying Information on the Viewfinder

One of the core features of the Godox C100, in my opinion, is the light meter function utilizing the transparent viewfinder. As the subject is seen through the display screen, battery level, aspect ratio (16:9, 3:2, 4:3, 1:1), and exposure information overlap on top of it like a HUD. It meters the central 25% area of the screen and displays the appropriate aperture and shutter speed values for the current lighting. It is great to use as an intuitive auxiliary device for checking exposure when taking out a mechanical film camera.

After carrying it around and shooting with it for a few days, the rough texture characteristic of the 2-megapixel sensor stands out. It is different from the sharpness of the latest digital devices, but since I wanted a worn film look with noise, I quite like the tone of the results.

However, because there is no Image Stabilization (OIS), you have to hold your breath to prevent blurring when shooting indoors with insufficient light.

The minimum focusing distance is fixed at 1.2m. While it poses no problem for shooting subjects at everyday distances, you should consider that close-up macro photography of objects within around 50cm is virtually impossible.

The Charm of Analog Given by Imperfection

For the first time in a while, I felt the joy of recording fleeting moments made charming by noise rather than sharp and crisp photos. It is a fun toy worth pressing the shutter on when you get tired of the fast pace of digital.
