Herman Miller Aeron Review: Pros, Cons, and Buying Tips You Must Know Before Purchasing

Herman Miller is considered a brand that defined the history of modern furniture design. In communities like the DC Inside Chair Gallery, the debate over whether or not “the chair is ultimately a Herman Miller” has been going on for years, proving the brand’s unparalleled iconic status.

The Aeron is the iconic model that represents Herman Miller. I first used an older model Aeron at my first job, and that experience completely changed my standards for what constitutes a good chair. Since then, the “New Aeron” was released in 2016, featuring a modern redesign of materials and support mechanisms. It introduced 8-zone tension mesh and a more sophisticated PostureFit SL.

Actually, I’m writing this now because I recently added a New Aeron to my own home setup. lol

Reading the Product Code

For example, if the code is ‘AER1B23DW-0004. ALP G1 G1 G1 BB BK’, it translates to the following:

• AER1: Assembly type (1: Fully assembled product)
• B: Chair size (A: Small, B: Medium, C: Large)
• 2: Cylinder height (1: Low, 2: Standard, 3: High)
• 3: Tilt option (1: Standard, 2: Limited tilt, 3: Full tilt with forward tilt)
• D: Armrest type (N: None, P: Fixed, H: Height adjustable, A: 3D adjustable, D: Fully adjustable)
• W: Armrest material (W: Urethane/Vinyl, F: Leather)

Choosing Casters (Wheels) Based on Environment

You should choose your casters based on your floor type and sensitivity to noise. The “fake DC1” casters often provided with direct imports are low-quality urethane wheels. For home use, many people switch to genuine DC1 casters (around 80,000 KRW) to reduce noise.

• BB: Standard nylon material. For carpet use only; creates a “rattling” noise on hardwood floors.
• C7 / C9: Urethane coated. Quiet on hard floors; C9 includes a brake function that restricts movement when not under weight.
• DC1: Aeron-specific model with urethane coating and patented “Quiet Roll” technology. Eliminates noise from gaps in the aluminum base.

Facts About Headrests

If you check the official Herman Miller website, you’ll find there is no official Aeron headrest. This is because, from the design phase, it was intended to help the spine and neck maintain a proper, upright posture without one. Many people mistake the Atlas headrest for an official product, but it is a third-party accessory made by a former Herman Miller designer. For this reason, I chose not to add a headrest to maintain the intended posture of the Aeron.

Major Noise Issues with Herman Miller Aeron

Despite being a high-end piece of equipment, there are some noise issues inherent to its structural mechanism. (Source: DC Chair Gallery, rated out of 10 points for stress)

• “Thud” Issue [Stress: 6]: A “thud” sound occurs after reclining fully or when leaning forward, shifting weight to the front of the tilt box. The defect rate is low; it is generally considered a structural noise typical of Herman Miller’s office chair tilt mechanisms.
• “Clunk” Issue [Stress: 4]: A “clunking” sound heard when spinning or rotating while in a reclined position. Frequency is low, caused by micro-friction or tension changes between internal components during rotation.
• “Click” Issue [Stress: 8]: A sharp “clicking” sound caused by parts within the tilt box hitting each other due to narrow clearances. This is a clear defect that causes significant stress and is recommended for A/S (after-sales service).
• “Squeak” Issue [Stress: 1]: Squeaking friction sound when pressing on the plastic frame outside the mesh. The occurrence rate is relatively high, but since it’s rarely noticeable during normal use, most users ignore it.

The Absolute Necessity of In-Person Testing

The Aeron uses a firm mesh seat with a curved frame edge. Therefore, if the chair doesn’t fit your body type, the frame can press uncomfortably against your thighs. To ensure there is no interference, you must visit an official showroom to set up the chair to your body and sit in it—both in an upright position and while tilted—for at least 10 minutes.

New Aeron Pros and Cons

Pros

• Excellent Breathability: The 8Z Pellicle mesh ensures you stay cool and sweat-free even during long hours.
• Semi-permanent Durability: The mesh tension remains strong even after over 10 years of daily use.
• Incredible Resale Value: Extremely high brand recognition makes it easy to recover much of your investment in the used market.
• 12-Year Warranty: For the original purchaser, all repairs and parts replacements within the warranty period are free of charge (shipping/labor fees excluded).

Cons

• Fabric Friction Damage: The strong friction of the mesh can easily wear out thin clothing or soft shorts.
• Fiber Dust Accumulation: Fine fibers from worn-out clothing can accumulate on the floor under the chair.
• A/S Wait Times: Large parts like the seat pan or mesh integrated into the frame may take up to 2 months to arrive via sea freight from the headquarters.

Official vs. Parallel Import: What to Buy?

Both official purchases and parallel imports have their own pros and cons, so choose based on your budget and preferences.

Domestic Official Dealers (Innovad, Space Logic, Garim, etc.)

• Pros: The peace of mind provided by a 12-year warranty. (Premium shops like Chair Park also carry official products.)
• Cons: Higher base price, though promotional prices can be quite reasonable (e.g., 1.68 million KRW with headrest at furniture fairs, 1.39 million KRW at Coupang Garim).

Note: For minor consumable parts, some A/S centers may ship the parts for DIY replacement rather than sending a technician.

Parallel Imports (Naver Boom Korea, Taobao, etc.)

• Pros: Overwhelming cost-effectiveness. For instance, the all-time low price at Boom Korea was around 850,000 KRW.
• Cons: While some sellers offer a 12-year warranty (handling repairs through their purchase records), there is an inherent risk if the company goes out of business.

Final Thoughts and Size Selection

I currently have two herniated discs. After taking up swimming, the pain has subsided, but I still have a major flare-up about once a year that leaves me bedridden for a week. So, I desperately needed a chair that forces my back into a proper posture.

Actually, when I visited the Chair Park in Cheongdam, I found the Okamura Contessa 2 felt more comfortable because it wrapped around my waist. However, because my experience with Herman Miller at my first job was so positive, and I was satisfied with the support of the Aeron during the trial, I decided on the New Aeron.

My official recommended size is C. However, when I sat in it, the seat depth was too long, causing the back of my knees to rub against the edge, which was very uncomfortable. In contrast, the size B fit perfectly without knee interference. The forward-tilt feature is fantastic for filling the gap between my back and the chair when I’m hyper-focused on blogging or photo editing.
