Have you ever booked a Socar car thinking it cost 50,000 KRW on the app, only to be surprised by an extra 30,000 KRW charged after returning it?

Having used it three times consecutively—from trips to Busan and Yeosu to a summer vacation at Ocean World this year—I’ve truly experienced the easily confusing pricing structure. For those who want to calculate Socar rental fees in advance and plan their budget, I have organized the reasons why the final payment amount varies by item, based on the actual receipt used for this Ocean World “open-run” (rushing in right at opening time).

Base Rental Fee and Mileage Fee Have Different Payment Timings

Socar fees are largely divided into two categories.

Socar Usage Fee = Rental Fee + Mileage Fee

The reason the payment amount is confusing here is because the payment timing differs. The rental fee and insurance are paid in advance when you book the vehicle on the app. On the other hand, the mileage fee is calculated and additionally charged based on the distance traveled after you finish using and return the car. You must remember that the initial amount you see on the booking screen is not the end of it.

My Money, My Ride: Actual Cost Sharing for Socar Trip to Ocean World

When going to Ocean World this summer, my own car had issues, so I rented a The New Seltos. Since I had to leave early in the morning, I considered using the “Call” service, which costs 10,000 to 20,000 KRW more to have the car delivered right to my front door, but thankfully there was a Socar parking lot right in front of my house. I booked it for 6:00 AM for the Ocean World open-run, and thanks to the vehicle being ready at 5:00 AM, I got a free 1-hour early prep and successfully made the open-run.

The actual payment details are as follows:

• Pre-payment before driving: 172,980 KRW
• Rental fee: 150,030 KRW (Coupon discount: -150,020 KRW applied)
• Insurance & coverage product: 22,950 KRW (Zero deductible product)

• Additional payment after driving: 51,480 KRW
• Namyangju ↔ Gangchon Hi-Pass toll fee: 7,200 KRW (3,600 KRW each way)
• Mileage fee: 44,280 KRW
• Total driving distance: 194 km
• 30 km: Free (0 KRW)
• 164 km: 270 KRW applied per 1 km

Ultimately, a total of 224,460 KRW was spent. Although I significantly lowered the pre-payment amount by applying a discount coupon during booking, it seems like a regular discount so you can probably ignore it. You can see that about 50,000 KRW was additionally charged after the return according to the mileage unit price (270 KRW per 1 km).

Check Mileage Unit Prices and Protection Products (Insurance) by Vehicle Model

Mileage fees have different unit prices per 1 km for each vehicle model. You must check the Socar mileage fee unit price on the detail page before booking a vehicle to estimate the actual cost. For example, if the All-New Seltos is 0 to 270 KRW, it means the first 30 km are free (0 KRW service?), and 270 KRW is charged per km thereafter.

In addition, the item that increases the payment amount during the booking stage is the protection product. You can set the maximum amount you have to pay out of pocket in case of an accident (deductible). The lower you set the deductible, the more expensive the insurance premium you pay when booking becomes. Rather than blindly choosing the cheapest product to cut costs, I recommend choosing one tailored to your driving environment and driving proficiency.

Actually, rather than accident handling, I invested 20,000 KRW in the zero-deductible plan just to make things more convenient by eliminating tedious procedures like taking photos or checks during rental and return. Lol. Preparing for a worst-case scenario during the Ocean World drive was just a bonus.

Free Fuel? Additional Costs You Might Not Think Of

When refueling is necessary, you must use the exclusive fuel card provided inside the vehicle. You must not pay at the gas station with your personal card. This is because fuel costs are structured to be included in the mileage fee billed after the return.

Aside from that, there are situations where the amount increases after the return even after calculating all expected fees.

• Hi-Pass toll fees: If you pass through a toll gate with the terminal installed in the vehicle, it will be billed together with the mileage fee upon return. (Refer to the 7,200 KRW billing details for Namyangju ↔ Gangchon on my receipt)
• Late return penalty: If you return the vehicle past the promised rental time, a penalty fee will be charged. If you think you will be late, you must extend the return in advance on the app to prevent unnecessary costs.

KTX and Socar Combination Instead of Direct Driving

If you live in Seoul or near major KTX stations, I strongly recommend connecting with KTX for long-distance travel. I also used this method on my trips to Yeosu and Busan. Rather than driving all the way down from Seoul yourself, traveling quickly by KTX and then renting a car at a Socar Zone near Yeosu Expo Station or Busan Station is much better in terms of fatigue. I bought time and physical strength with money. Lol. Since you only rent and pay mileage fees for the time and distance needed locally, it can also be advantageous cost-wise depending on the situation.
