A stream controller can make editing easier, but Elgato’s prices are difficult to justify for every setup. I bought the black MiraBox N4 (Mbox N4) for $53 in an AliExpress sale, about 80,000 KRW, as a cheaper option. Here, I’ll explain why I replaced the white version and chose the standard model over the Pro. The aim was convenient shortcut and dial controls for editing, without overspending.
Switching from White to Black for Desk Aesthetics

Walnut and dark-gray equipment give my desk a deliberately dark tone. I initially put the white Mbox N4 in the center, where its brightness pulled attention away from the rest of the arrangement. It didn’t sit comfortably beside the monitor bezels or the keyboard. The issue wasn’t the device’s functions; the color was simply breaking the visual balance I wanted at the place I spend so much time working.

I eventually sold the white version and bought black. The matte case reflects little light and blends into the surrounding equipment more quietly. Fingerprints are also less obvious, making routine care easier. Once it was in place, the change seemed obvious enough that I wondered why I hadn’t chosen this color from the start.
Why I Chose the Standard Version Over the MiraBox N4 Pro

The recently released MiraBox N4 Pro adds RGB lighting around the volume knob. If the goal is a bright desk accent, I can see why it attracts attention. Comparing the specification sheets, though, I found little difference in the functions I needed, including button count and software support. An extra 20,000 to 30,000 KRW for lighting alone didn’t fit my purpose. I wanted the core macro controls and a dial I could operate intuitively. The existing standard version already covered that, so I stayed with it.
A Work Environment at 1/4 the Price of an Elgato Stream Deck

I bought this unit for $53 during an AliExpress promotion. Even including shipping, it cost around 80,000 KRW. Compared to the Elgato Stream Deck Plus, which is considered the industry standard, it is a quarter of the price. I was worried that the performance might suffer due to the low cost, but the tactile feel of the buttons and the response speed on the screen when adjusting the dials are remarkably fast.
I assigned Photoshop brush-size adjustment and Premiere Pro timeline zoom to the controls. Those are the kinds of repeated operations for which a direct dial or macro is useful, and I noticed the improvement in my everyday working pace. Having built that control setup at a modest cost, I no longer felt a need to keep chasing a more expensive controller simply for its position at the top of the market.
The Value of a Budget-Friendly Black Desk Setup

High-end gear certainly provides psychological satisfaction. However, the process of selecting only the features you truly need and setting them up at a reasonable price is just as rewarding. The Mbox N4 black comes with an accessible price tag, but it delivers performance that exceeds expectations in real-world use. In particular, the matte black design, which fits perfectly with my dark desk tone, makes the time I spend working at my desk much more satisfying. For those who want to build a comfortable shortcut environment without overspending, this is a fantastic alternative.
