Lately, I’ve been seeing many community members and neighbors sharing stunning visualizations of their past travel routes using the Google Timeline visualizer. Eager to render my own major trips onto a map, I opened Google Maps only to find a completely blank calendar. To cut straight to the chase, disabled Google Timeline settings and smartphone power-saving modes were the primary culprits behind the missing logs. Since maintaining battery efficiency is far more important to me for daily device use, I decided to skip turning the options back on and gracefully gave up. For anyone frustrated by missing location histories like I was, here is a breakdown of my experience.

Why Missing Long-Distance Trips and Business Travels Hurt More

I had high expectations for this year’s timeline results because I’ve been traveling for long distances unusually often. The records should have captured everything from my flights with my son to Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, from late last year to early this year, to the family trip to Japan with my wife and son. On top of that, my business trips to Manchester and Liverpool in May and July—which involved complex transit routes around Wilmslow and Royal Birkdale—would have made for fantastic visualization data if mapped out.

However, as you can see in the photos, my timeline calendar is filled entirely with diagonal hash marks. Hahaha. No travel routes were saved for any date, including today, August 24. At the bottom of the screen, a clear message read “Visits and routes aren’t being saved.” Because location data is not being collected in the background, there is simply no source data available to render a map.

The Exact Cause of Missing Records Found in My Device Settings

You can instantly diagnose why your history isn’t saving through the internal settings of the Google Maps app. Just tap your profile in the upper right corner of Google Maps and enter the “Your Timeline” menu. Tapping the “Review settings” menu at the bottom of the calendar screen instantly displays your smartphone’s current configuration state.

My screen showed the notice “New visits aren’t being saved” along with the status of three items:

• Timeline setting: Off
• Device location setting: On
• Stop power saving mode: On

While the device location permission itself was properly turned on, the Google Timeline feature was turned off. Crucially, the power-saving mode that I always keep on for smartphone battery management was the problem. When power saving mode is active, background location-tracking activities are completely blocked, preventing the device from logging travel routes. Because the GPS cannot constantly ping locations, tracking is bound to drop.

Once I found the exact cause, making a choice was actually quite easy. I didn’t feel any compelling need to enable background tracking and disable power-saving mode just to get a cool timeline graphic. When you have to check work emails during frequent business trips and outfield work, or constantly use your smartphone camera to shoot desk setups and newly acquired audio gear, remaining battery percentage is always a major concern.

In particular, letting GPS constantly log locations in the background drains the battery noticeably fast. For me, a reliable smartphone battery life that lasts all day without a charger is far more important than flashy visual route records. I had no intention of changing my fundamental device settings just for a single timeline feature, so I let go of the setting without any lingering regrets. If you are someone who keeps power-saving mode on constantly for battery management, you are better off skipping this visualization feature like I did.

My Personal Logging Alternative Instead of Automatic Records

Even without Google Maps’ automatic logging, I meticulously record everything myself using spreadsheets—from audio gear reviews and keyboard purchase histories to personal visitation schedules. While it lacks the visual flair of a visualizer, logging everything reliably in my own way is more than enough.

I hope my quick-resignation review serves as a small reference for anyone currently searching for answers due to a blank timeline. While I unfortunately missed out on the joy of visualization, I definitely protected my smartphone battery, so I hope everyone maintains device settings that suit their own usage patterns comfortably.
