Retune Wood Palm Rest: Perfecting Your Desk Setup with 1mm Customization
When you type thousands of characters a day, you inevitably face two major challenges: wrist fatigue and office aesthetics. After cycling through various foam and plastic wrist rests, I finally found myself turning to solid wood. I recently had the chance to use a walnut Retune Wood palm rest, which I am now using for both my home and office setup.
Unboxing Retune Wood: First Impressions
There is no fancy outer packaging; opening the carton reveals the palm rest wrapped in paper cushioning, along with 8 bumpons (in two different types).
The entire palm rest gives off a subtle scent of North American walnut, and the surface finish is flawless with no scratches whatsoever.
During the ordering process, I requested an engraving of my Instagram handle, ‘ocean._.desk’, on the top right. The font size and depth blend perfectly with the natural dark tone of the walnut.
I applied two of the included transparent bumpons to the top edge to prevent it from making direct contact with the keyboard housing. Aluminum keyboards can sometimes get scratched from rubbing against a palm rest, so this was a great touch.
The Retune Wood logo engraved on the center of the bottom adds a nice detail even where it isn’t normally seen. I assume it implies “re-tuning” wood to serve as a palm rest.
For the bottom anti-slip treatment, instead of the basic bumpons, I cut and applied some anti-slip tape I already had, as four rubber feet felt a bit unstable.
Walnut: The Perfect Choice for Your Desk Aesthetics
Retune Wood offers various species options, including Cherry, Hard Maple, Camphor, and Walnut. I chose Walnut to match my black desk setup. It provides a heavy, calm feel that pairs beautifully with dark-toned keyboards. For an office setting, I think Camphor would also be a great choice.
The surface is finished with natural Rubio Monocoat oil from Belgium. It’s safe enough to be used on baby toys and irritation-free. Thanks to a “water-sanding” process, the texture remains smooth and dry even in humid conditions or when your hands get sweaty—effectively solving the common complaint of surface tackiness found in some solid wood products.
How to Choose the Perfect Fit for Your Keyboard
I ordered the Tenkeyless (TKL) size, but the fact that you can customize the length in 1mm increments is a game-changer. Users with non-standard layouts like 75% or 60%, for which it is often hard to find accessories, can get a perfect, gap-free fit. This is a massive plus for desk enthusiasts.
For height, I chose the standard 20mm spec to ensure proper wrist support. While it functions excellently with my keyboard, the palm rest sits slightly higher than the front edge of the keyboard housing, which is a bit of a missed opportunity aesthetically.
In my opinion, even for a standard mechanical keyboard, choosing the 16mm slim version would likely result in a much smoother, sleeker front line, so keep that in mind.
Due to the nature of the handmade solid wood process, the wood grain and color tone may vary slightly from the photos. If you are accustomed to the uniform consistency of mass-produced goods, this natural irregularity might feel a bit unique.
