Miku Transition Lite: Haimu Switch Mod
To freshen things up today, I took out my SwagKeys Transition Lite (Teal Transparent) + Hatsune Miku custom keyboard from the drawer. As I started writing this blog post, I noticed a strange, inconsistent feel at my fingertips.
Why the Outemu Silent Lime switches don’t suit me
The keyboard was previously equipped with Outemu Silent Lime switches. With a bottom-out force of 50gf and an operating force of 35gf, the key pressure is quite low. While this reduces finger fatigue during long typing sessions, the lack of tactile feedback makes the typing experience feel dull.
I’ve decided to swap them out to fix that lackluster feel. I originally chose them to match the teal transparent housing and satisfy my tactile preference, but looking at it now, the colors don’t really match well either. Haha.
Fixing over-lubed used Haimu Midnight switches
A few months ago, I bought some used Haimu Midnight linear switches from a local marketplace after seeing they were “hand-lubed.” The seller claimed to have lubed them by hand, but once I installed them, the slider travel felt unpleasantly sluggish and inconsistent.
When I opened a switch, I found the housing was heavily over-lubed, which was hindering the slider movement. I disassembled all 87 switches, wiped the excess lube from the housings with a cotton swab, applied a thin, even coat to the sliders with a brush, and adjusted the lubricant on the springs by shaking them in a bag with two paper towels.
After reassembling, the stiffness was gone, and the switches regained their signature smooth, crisp “clack” that Haimu Midnights are known for. I thought I’d quickly swap them out over the weekend, but I ended up re-lubing 87 switches… sigh. Regardless, once I installed the blue Haimu Midnight switches into the transparent mint housing, the color combination looked quite good.
Checklist for Transition Lite switch replacement
Usually, the standard way to remove switches from a mechanical keyboard is to disassemble the PCB first. Beginners should keep this in mind! As for me, I just wing it with the attitude of “if something breaks, I’ll just solder it back.” Haha.
Once the switches were installed, I put the original Hatsune Miku PBT keycaps back on. The white and blue two-tone base, along with the cute pixel heart accent keys, completed the look. Typing on it now, I really love that distinct, crisp sound of the Haimu Midnight switches.
I’ll be sticking with the SwagKeys Transition Lite Miku Edition for my typing for the time being.
