Kiwi Ears Halcyon: A MEMS Game Changer?

It is always exciting to encounter audio gear featuring new technology. The Kiwi Ears Halcyon, which I am introducing today, adopts a tribrid structure equipped with a total of five drivers: one dynamic driver (DD), three balanced armatures (BA), and a USound MEMS driver dedicated to the high frequencies. When I first saw the specs, I was very curious about how these three distinct driver types would blend together. After spending a few days listening to them in my desk setup, I’m ready to share my thoughts without holding anything back.

Upon opening the box, the first thing that catches the eye is the cold, metallic texture of the earpieces.

One feature I personally loved among the accessories is the switchable cable. Being able to swap between a 3.5mm single-ended jack and a 4.4mm balanced jack with a single stock cable eliminates the need to carry multiple cables. The cable itself is surprisingly supple, making it very easy to handle. I didn’t expect much from Kiwi Ears regarding the cable, but this was a pleasant surprise.

The package includes a total of six pairs of ear tips, featuring both wide-bore tips for an open sound and standard tips. Along with spare replacement screen filters and a sturdy dedicated carrying case, the package feels quite practical and well-rounded.

The full-metal housing gives it a heavy, luxurious feel when held. The faceplate features an elegant engraved pattern that blends seamlessly with the matte titanium-colored housing. Since it houses five drivers and special acoustic chambers, I expected the units to be large; however, they are smaller than anticipated and fit snugly within the concha, providing a very comfortable fit. Note that the nozzle diameter is quite thick, which might cause ear pressure issues with certain third-party tips. I found the size M wide-bore tips to be a perfect fit for me.

What is a MEMS Driver?

For those who may be unfamiliar with MEMS drivers, let me briefly explain. MEMS is essentially a micro-speaker manufactured using the same semiconductor silicon processing technology used to create smartphone chipsets. Instead of heavy magnets or copper coils—the core components of traditional earphones—it uses a thin silicon membrane that vibrates in response to minute electrical currents to produce sound. Because there is virtually no mass in the moving parts, the transient response is exponentially faster than traditional methods. As a result, the sound decay is not muddy, and you get extremely transparent and clean resolution in the high-frequency range.

For my primary listening, I used the SMSL DO400 desktop DAC/amp with a 4.4mm balanced connection. I also tested it with a portable DAC for a more casual, everyday setup. Because the earphone’s sound transparency is so high, the perceived resolution changes significantly depending on the background noise floor and the cleanliness of the power output. Synergy is definitely at its peak when paired with a powerful desktop device that has excellent noise suppression.

Core Sound Analysis

The highs produced by the MEMS driver are the most attractive point. The fast response provides a crisp, open, airy feel without lingering decay. It is impressive how the sound lines remain transparent and do not get harsh or muddy, even in complex tracks with dense information. In particular, the metallic, piercing irritation often feared in hybrid earphones is smoothed out, resulting in less fatigue even during long listening sessions. If you find the signature brightness of the MEMS a bit too sharp, try matching it with wide-bore tips; they soften the high-frequency lines nicely.

The mids, handled by three BA drivers, offer very clean separation between instruments and vocals. It feels like it extracts every tiny breath from the vocalist and every subtle tremor from the recording environment. Female vocals come across as extremely vivid and clear. However, due to the controlled nature of the bass, the low-mids are somewhat reserved, which can make deep, thick male vocals feel a bit thin.

The bass from the 10mm dynamic driver is firm and fast, with no unnecessary boominess. It has a pleasing sub-bass boost of about 8dB, but it cuts off sharply around 200Hz, ensuring it doesn’t bleed into other frequencies. While it might not have an overwhelming volume of bass, the texture of a bass guitar string or the impact of a kick drum is heard with pinpoint accuracy and clarity. It is a tuning that retains a dry, analytical studio character while not sacrificing the fun, thanks to the punchiness of the sub-bass.

Resolution, soundstage, and imaging are all better than expected. It is not just about having a wide left-to-right space; there is an imaging quality that maps the front-to-back distance of instruments dimensionally. Within the wide virtual stage, it captures the position of each instrument well, and when listening to complex orchestral arrangements or live recordings with high dynamics, the resolution and imaging work together in harmony to let you gauge the size of the space.

Real-World Daily Usage

Beyond music appreciation, it performs exceptionally well for multimedia tasks and gaming. When playing rhythm games like DJMAX or Muse Dash, the hit sounds of each note are distinct and clear, enhancing immersion. It pairs well with portable DACs using ESS chipsets, making it a great all-rounder for keeping at your desk for long work sessions with BGM, thanks to its analytical nature and minimal coloration.

Pros and Cons

Recommended for:

  • Those who enjoy “dissecting” and listening to every individual instrument.
  • Those who want high-resolution, clear highs but want to avoid fatiguing sibilance.
  • Those who want to experience MEMS technology at a relatively accessible price.

Not recommended for:

  • Those who prefer a thick, rich mid-bass that warmly blankets the entire track.
  • Those who listen mostly to highly compressed YouTube sources rather than lossless audio.

The fact that it is launching via Kickstarter at an accessible price point under $200, despite adopting new tribrid technology, is a major merit. There are options for a boom mic cable or an amp-integrated cable, but if you are an audiophile, I recommend skipping those. As mentioned earlier, to pull out the full potential of this device, I recommend pairing it with a portable DAC that has sufficient output and low noise.

The Kiwi Ears Halcyon is a device that demonstrates technical ambition in driving the democratization of high-resolution sound. It isn’t just another generic mild V-shaped “fun” sound; the U-shaped balance—a refined, uncolored monitor sound topped with pleasing sub-bass and bright ultra-highs—is likely to keep it plugged into my main amp for quite a while.
