Choosing My Next Headphones under $750
I’d like some advice from fellow audio enthusiasts. With summer approaching and headphone options changing, I’m considering an upgrade. I’ve tried several affordable models and plan to keep the Sennheiser HD600 as a reference. Now I want an all-rounder that offers a clear step up in performance.
My listening setup is desktop-based, using an SMSL DO400 DAC/amp.
My Headphone Journey
For context, these are the headphones I’ve spent time with:
- Sennheiser HD600 (Owned): Not the absolute best by modern standards, but a meaningful reference. I plan to keep it for its historical value.
- AKG K702 (Sold): The sound signature felt too thin and lacked the power I enjoy.
- Philips SHP9500 (Sold): Too neutral and plain; lacked engagement.
- Philips X2HR (Sold): Great sound texture, but disappointing in terms of resolution.
- Audio-Technica M50xBT (Sold): Lacked a refined, clean sound even in wired mode.
- Hifiman HE400se Stealth Magnet (Sold): Replaced immediately after acquiring the Edition XS.
- Hifiman Edition XS (Owned): Satisfied with the planar-magnetic openness and resolution, but I am looking for a significant tier jump.
- Hifiman HE-R10D (Sold): Too much bass, but it was muddy and diffuse rather than tight.
- Shure SRH840A (Sold): Good, but outperformed by the dynamic punch of the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X.
- Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X (Owned): Currently enjoying its satisfying, punchy dynamic signature.
- Kiwi Ears Serenade (Planned for sale): Disappointed by the stuffy sound and the smeared bass response.
- FiiO JT7 (Sold): A great device, but it couldn’t surpass the soundstage of the Edition XS.
Preferred Sound Signature
I’ve spent time with far more IEMs than headphones, and those experiences give a clearer picture of my preferences. The Unique Melody MEST MKII and AKG N5005 with the high-boost filter are my favorites. What I enjoy is the former’s remarkable resolution and the N5005’s firm, hard-hitting bass. Up top, I want an open, airy presentation with a refreshing sense of extension. Bass quantity alone doesn’t persuade me, especially if the notes spread out instead of striking cleanly. I also tend to avoid indistinct or delicate-sounding lines that lack the strength and definition I am looking for.
Models Discarded from Consideration
Based on my research, I’ve ruled out these models because they don’t seem to match that preference:
- Aune SR7000 / Fosi i5: Their restrained, relaxed presentation may not provide the impact I enjoy from the N5005.
- Audeze MM100: It looks too dry and clinical for the emotional involvement I’m after.
- Audeze LCD-2C: The dark, weighty tuning doesn’t seem to suit my preference for bright, detailed treble. Physical weight is another concern over long sessions.
Final Three Contenders
On the used market, I’d like to stay under 1 million KRW and hear a definite improvement over my Edition XS.
1. Focal Radiance
- I’m hoping for the tight bass impact I like from the N5005. My concern is whether the closed-back design will feel congested.
2. Hifiman Ananda Unveiled
- The prospect of retaining the openness I enjoy while moving above the Edition XS is appealing. My hesitation is practical rather than a listening verdict: the design has no grille, so I worry about dust getting in and about the attention it might require to keep it in good condition. That concern makes it harder to commit despite the attraction of the upgrade.
3. FiiO FT7
- The carbon-black appearance and modern technology appeal to me. I’m less sure it can deliver the physical impact I’d expect from a Focal.
I’d welcome suggestions under 1 million KRW used that clearly improve on my Edition XS: crisp treble, firm bass even if there isn’t a lot of it, and better detail. If you’ve heard something on my shortlist, or another model I should consider, please explain why you think it fits.
